It is a SUNPASS. www.sunpass.com Allows you to go through the toll booth through out Florida and the Brunswick GA area without stopping at the toll booths. You have your own "Sunpass" lane and blast through at highway speed at most toll booths.

You will need to purchase the electronic box from Publix, WalMart in Florida,I think it is $29.00,then set up an account with sunpass on line with a credit card, and you are good to go in8-10 hours. It deducts the toll from your prepaid account each time you go through a toll booth, then automatically refills your account when it gets low. You choose the amount you want on the pass.

Hope this helps.

PJ: Glad you had a safe ride with lots of discovery along the way. And thanks for the reviews on the "waterproof" gear--we're planning a nine day trip from Atlanta to New Mexico in May, and raingear is a priority. Personally, I have had HD Gore-Tex boots (made by Wolverine) for the past three years (have two pairs and swap them) and have stayed dry in some heavy rain.

Also, makes me more convinced I should buy the fairing lowers for the trip.

Thanks, again, for sharing.

Thanks for sharing your story. I live in GA also. I took a wonderful ride to NM last fall which was my first trip over 500 miles. I can't wait for my next one. Key West is high on my to-do-list!

Thanks John for the extensive documentation of your great ride!
I especially enjoyed the discussion of how your gear worked and the
discussion of Florida's parks. They are truly some of the nicest I have
found in the States!!
NICE BIKE!!

That story makes me want to get a touring bike for sure now.
I'm not sure I could ride 500 miles a day, day after day, without a cruise control.

Great post John, informative and concise. Key West is always nice, long as you're not stuck behind Ma & Pa Kettle in that slow moving motorhome! As the saying goes "Key West, where the weird turn Pro"....

The Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West is about 110 miles and the speed limit varies from 45mph to 55mph. I had heard stories that it's much slower moving than that, but it turned out for us that it moved at the speed limit or slightly faster. The only slow point we experienced was the regulated section through the Key Deer Habitat where the speed limit during the day was 45mph and at night 35mph. We passed through there right about sunset and wouldn't you know it, a Florida Highway Patrol officer was right behind me for about 10 miles. I couldn't decide whether I was there during the day or night, so I ended up going that 10 miles at 34mph!

If you make the trip, you will definitely want to take Card Sound Road from Homestead to Key Largo rather than US 1. Card Sound Road is very scenic and much faster than US 1 for that stretch, as US 1 is undergoing very heavy construction. Be aware that there is a toll bridge ($1.00) on Card Sound Road, so you'll want to tuck a bill in your glove. And don't forget to stop at Alabama Jack's on the Card Sound Road for great food and refreshments!
