How far north do you plan on going?

When you get to Boise, head north on Hwy 55 through Cascade and McCall, nice lakes at both. Keep north to New Meadows and continue north on Hwy 95 to the Grangeville/Kooskia area to pick Hwy 12 east towards Lolo/Missoula. 55/95 -Hells Canyon/Lolo Pass are Awsome roads

Or continue all the way to Coeur d'lene then take Hwy 90 to Missoula.

From Missoula Tka Hwy 90 eastto 1 south. When you get to Georgetown Lake Stop forthe night. The lake is Beautiful first thing in the morning.

I'll let someone from Montana take it from there.

If it's still there, Fred's Lounge at exit 96 just west of Missoula is always fun.

Here is a link for ya... http://www.openroadjourney.com/articles/115.asp

Ditto on all things above. Yellowstone during a weekday is great. West side is a little twisty/fun, the east side is more scenic and has the wildlife. Traffic can be frustrating at any time. East side of the Tetons is an awesome view. Depending on when you get here, Timpanogos Harely may have thier new "destination" dealership open and from the sounds of it, would be worth the 30 mins drive south of SLC.

Hogdoc is right on about Cascade, McCall, New Meadows and especially Hwy 12 Kooskia to Lolo Pass along the Lochsa River. The road sign as you leave Kooskia reads "Curves Next 77 Miles". After Lolo Pass Hwy 12 takes you to Missoula. If you have the time go to Glacier National Park and take the "Going to the Sun Hwy". Bring a coat.

My wife and I were through there a couple of years ago as part of a 2 week, 4500 mile circle and we promised ourselves next time that we would just haul *** directly to the Yellowstone area and spend as much time there as possible.

You'll hear about Beartooth Pass and Chief Joseph Hwy, and those are no-brainers.

But if you're looking for cool places to stop that aren't on the HOG map, pay a visit to the New Atlas Bar in downtown Columbus, MT. It was celebrating it's 100th anniversary when we were there. This place is as close to an old western saloon as you're going to get, and it's not made to look that way, it's the real deal. It's worth it just to see all the mounts on the walls. I have no idea where the "new" in the name comes from, because it ain't.

You can also get a pretty good steak up the street at the little restaurant/casino across from the car wash.

In Montana:
Make sure to get to Glacier National Park and take the "Going to the Sun" Highway. It is the most beautiful place I've ever seen!!
The Flathead Valley is very nice as well as the Seeley Lake area.
I think the wife and I are gonna try to get up there again this summer.

Head East out of SLC on 80 and then North at Evanston, WY...cuts across the NE tip of UT back through Garden City, around Bear Lake up into Jackson, WY. Good place to overnight and head out early the next morning...ride through Teton National Park and get to Yellowstone...it would be good to have a full day to ride through Yellowstone, our the NE gate through Cooke City and into Red Lodge over the Beartooth. There's a few days worth of travel right there!

How much time do you have?

Chief Joseph Highway

Beartooth Pass

Teton National Park

Bear Lake, ID

Well, there's not really much to see out there; but if you must go. Going North, US Route 12 from Kooskia, ID to Lolo Mt (the ride along the river is really, rerally nice). Somewhere efore that you can get a nice chile burger at Horseshoe Bend. Continuing North, Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park. Now heading South. The Museum of the Plains Indians in Browning (it's the best Indian museum I've found out there). Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman (I think). Yellowstone NP (northern part). Bear Tooth Pass (can be cold even in June). Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument (can be really hot in June). Devils Tower National Monument (it's not really a monument). If you are willing to venture into South Dakota, Spearfish Canyon (route 14 Alt from Spearfish to Lead through Deadwood,: the town in the HOB series) to Mount Rushmore National Memorial ( it's more impressive than I expected). Fort Laramie National Historic Site (WY) if you want to go that far South. Heading West. Route 120 from Thermopolis to Cody (Wyoming). The Cody museum and the rodeo. Yellowstone (again) and Grand Teton National Park. Into Idaho again. Arco (near Craters of the Moon National Monument) for the fried pickles. Hagerman (ID) for the National Parks site for the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument (it's on the main street). There you can get directions to the Minidoka Interment National Monument. This is pretty desolate and not very much to see; but is where some of the Japanese Americans were interred during World War II (there are essentially no structures left standing). When we were in the Hagerman visitor center, we saw photos about the interment site (it was new then), and my wife agreed "we have to go there." Her statement is the most memorable part of our trip for me (although many others come close); it still brings tears to my eyes.

Have a great trip.
