Default Power for Zuma 550

What is the best way to run the power for this unit? Do you guys just plug it into the cig. lighter? If anyone has simple instructions, please PM me.

Thanks
Travis

I hard wired mine to the cigarette lighter. There is also another hot wire right behind the headlight connection. taped to the harness. While the fairing was loose I ran a 6 ft patch cord (3.5mm stereo plug each end) thru handlebar hole in one side and out the other near the AUX imput for the radio.

If you want to be able to remove the mount, just leave the two small screws out of the plug in the mount or splice a connector in line.

I used the switched connector that Wecroft described just behind the headlight. I spliced an SAE connector about 6 inches from the Zumo cradle to make removing the mount easy. Probably took about 1 hour total and I soldered and heat shrunk all connections.

I don't have the 550, I have the Zumo 450 (doesn't come witha cigarette lighter plug like the 550) so I wentto Radio Shack and bought a male cigarette lighter power connector. Wired the plug on to theZumo power harness and simply plugged it into the cigarette lighter outlet on my 2008FLHX. I liked the idea of being able to remove all parts for the gps except for the Ram handlebar mount when not in use.

Hard wired mine directly to the battery as instructed. Wasn't hard to do and only took a few minutes... Good luck!!! "D"

T-Bone
here's a link to what I did....
https://www.hdforums.com/m_2796355/tm.htm

in one of the pictures you can see the plug I used, got it from Car Quest, waterproof....
inside the fairing on my 07 was two wires, blocked off with a red cap, was told this wire was for daytime running lights overseas..don't know, but it's hot when key is on, so I cut the connector off and tapped into that, works great.
The plug between the unit and power source allows me to move the unit as a whole from bike to bike to car...

couple of points
do you want your unit to have power even if bike and ignition is off
do you want to be able to quickly disconnect your unit and the support

if #1 is yes then assure that you connect directly to the battery or to a live hot wire
if #2 is yes then you would need like a bmw, sae or powerlet connector and make sure it is waterproof

Powerlet has a couple of good options for the Zumo 450 and 550.

Powerletproducts.com

They are very good people, will work with you on the phone, and make a quality, waterproof option for GPS, radar Detectors, and etc

Good Luck
