Yep, short distances! The powered hidden antenna that car stereo shops sell work great. Mount it to the top of the radio chassis wire it to the Orange/white wire tied to the headlight bundle. I was in Raton NM and picked up radio staion in Colorado Springs, About 135 miles away!

how do you get the antenna off? thought it would just unscrew, but it just feels like its spinning around.

Bought a short one for less than $10.00 at auto zone. Works great.

I have the JM short antennas; they have worked flawlessly.

It has been awhile since I removed mine; is there a set screw that also helps to secure them?

bought one of the shortie antennas off ebay, did okay but not as good as the whip, cut the stock antenna down about 18" still okay but not great. Haven't tried the hidden antenna but it seems to getsome good results.

Just checked the OEM's I removed; there is a set screw at the base of each antenna; just loosen and continue to unscrew the antenna.
