Default Derby Cover Removal - What to expect?

Good evening folks,

Rookie mechanic here, getting to be quite good at doing small and harmless bolt-on adds to my ride. Thinking of adding a custom derby cover (nothing more than something with a bit of a personalized design).

Two questions:
[ul][*]Any rocket-science to the removal of the stock derby cover?[*]When I remove this derby cover, is anythingterribly gruesome going to spew out?[/ul]
Put simply, is this a no-brainer or is it best left to a real mechanic?

Thanks!

One final thing, any good custom derby cover websites out there?

Maybe a little oil but no big surprises.

Make sure you get a new gasket for the new derby cover. You WILL need it. Other than that....nothing to it!

What do you ride buckwheat? I know with the road king classic you will have to remove the passenger floor board before you can get to all the torx bolts on the derby cover. The floor board will take a 5/16 inch hex wrench. The bolts on the derby cover will take T27 torx wrench.
Oh yeh. Make sure you have the bike upright and not on the side stand when you do it or you will have a mess.

also a good idea to put a couple of boards, nothing too big, under the kickstand to make the bike sit up straighter. this will help to keep any fluids from coming out. not necessary, but easy to do. ditto on the new gasket and you can look forever at derby covers. there is a bazillion out there. just look around and find what suits you.

Look, this is very simple to do. Don't pay to have this done. Take out the screws, replace the cover with whatever you buy and close it up. If you have a newer model, there will be a big black gasket behind the derby cover. It may stay put after you remove the cover or it may come off with the cover. No big deal. You do not need to replace it just because you have opened it up. My advise would be to take off the gasket, wipe the area around where the gasket seals against the primary, put the gasket back into it's original position, put the new derby cover on and tighten the screws. The screws should be tightened down in an alternating fashion such as 12:00, 7:00, 2:00,10:00, 5:00.....

P.S. if you don't have a lift to put your bike on, make sure you straighten up your bike before doing this. Put something under your kickstand (wood, brick) to make the bike level. Otherwise you will probably have too much leakage occur from the cover area.

Job done and you just saved some $$..........

What they said above, and you may also have a little difficulty removing those T27 Torx screws. Do a search for remedies before you run into trouble. Once they are out, many recommend replacement with stainless Allen heads.
