RE: Need help picking a bike
If you want the Street Glide, go for it. If you want a great bike for what sounds like a great price, I wouldn't hesitate to go for the Police bike. A friend of mine bought one and it's like brand new. Many police departments only use the bikes for parade use or very limited use. They don't use them for high speed chases! Also, the police bikes are usually very well maintained (they have deep pockets, courtesy of us tax payers). You can do a ton of customizing for the difference in money. The Street Glide only starts at around $20K, then you have to put another couple thousand to add the goods you'll want. Good luck with whatever you choose!

RE: Need help picking a bike
Moose, hope that maybe this information will help. I am currently in the process of trading in our 6 2004 Road Kings for 6 2006 Electra glides. What I can tell you is this: Out of the 6 we are trading in, I would jump on the chance to buy any of them for 10k. You would be getting a lot of bike for your money. One of them was ridden pretty hard but like someone said earlier they are mostly used for parades, funerals, etc and therefore are cleaned/maintained very meticulously. If they came from a big city department who uses them for traffic/patrol then they are probably ridden a bit harder. But judging by 8,000 miles in 3 years I doubt this to be the case. See if you can find out what PD they came from and give em a call and ask em what they are used for. Motor Cops are generally the coolest and would be happy to talk to you. We bought our origional 6 from seizure money and trade them every two years even up. Don't know how the dealer makes money but I bet they are jacking up the price big time when they resell em so again, 10k is a major deal!
Bottom line: It really sounds like you want a street glide and my advice is to get what you really want new, but if the money is a problem you will not be going wrong with a Police Motor and can eventually customize it like or better than a street glide (and some engine work) as money allows for less.
Take care, ride safe.

Moose,
I was in the same situation as you and went the new bike route. Why? Well, for me, it was like this... I have always owned used bikes. And no matter how good they looked, how many people looked em over, there was always some issue with them. Coupla years ago, I bought what I thought was a cherry bike, only to find out later that it had more helicoils in it than I had ever seen. Everything worked out, but a lot of wrenching when I wanted to ride. So, I decided to go new. Yes, the SG needs a new radio, but all I gotta do with that is ride it up to the dealer, talk politely, and they get to twist the wrenches.. So, I vote for new.
Having said all that, I hope whatever you get you ride the snot out of it and enjoy yourself. Every time I sling a leg over my ride, I smile! One last thing... one bike is never enough.... they tend to multiply, and it is a proven fact that one motorcycle all by itself will get lonely... so mebbe you will end up like me... An SG and something else... I want to turn my jap bikes into a sporty to mess around with, and leave the SG more toward the stock side...
Cheers,
GOSTAZ

My hubby is going through a similar dilema. He has a 2002 Heritage Softail. Has over 100,000 km on it though. It was his first Harley. He's at the point now, that he might have to do some major work on it anytime soon. He is so attached to this bike and is torn between doing the work on it and keeping it OR taking it a further step and getting a Street Glide or ElectaGlide. He puts on a lot of miles and we're planning a trip to Cabos San Lucas next winter. Now he's worried about dependability on the "old girl".... the Heritiage, that is (just so you don't confuse the "old girl" with THIS "ol'girl"). ! Especially if we're going to be in Mexico. Dealerships might be a little hard to find if we have trouble.
Should he keep the Heritage and spend the money to save her or should he go for the gusto and buy a new bike? This is a serious dilema. Ultimately, he would like me to trade my Fatboy in on the same thing and we would have matching bikes.
That is SUCH a tough decision to make! I love my bike, and she's been sooo good to me. Actually, we both love both of our bikes. They haven't let us down once. How do you choose????
Let us know how you make out with your choice!

I have a delema. Ive been wanting a 06 streetglide for awhile now but today I got an option to buy a 2003 police issue Electra Glide standard with 8k miles on it for 10k. The Electra is in good shape but its not a street glide. What should I do ? Get the Electra now or keep saving and wait to get the Streetglide for 18k in 3-4 months?

This pretty much tells me which bike you want. If you can afford the SG and overlook the obvious savings with the EG...go with the one you really want. If it was really a $$ issue you probably wouldn't be asking...but riding the EG by now.
The 3-4 month wait is going to go by fast...if you live in the snow belt you won't be able to ride much anyway.
I'd wait and buy the SG if I was in your shoes.

Man all can say is get what you really want but first take into account the $$ issue and the style of riding that you do I would get the ultra and turn it into a street glide and save the cash as far as the police bikes being beat to hell it all depends what town you live in for example here in South Florida most all the departments lease there fleet of bikes from local dealerships who under contract to the city maintain these scoots the city will trade them in for a new fleet every 1.5 - 2 years on average, remember most of the time these cop bikes are parked on the side of the road handing out tickets Im sure you can pick up that cop bike with at least a one year warranty lets face it these days 10,000 miles on an 88 aint nothin it's just starting to break in.I picked up a used cop bike a couple of years ago with 4,000 miles on it road it for a year and traded it in for an 05 Ultra and never had any problems.........BTW this Ultra I have now is one hell of a machine either way I dont think you would be dissapointed.....just my 2 cents man........good luck and ride safe................Manny
