RE: Extended Warranty
FWIW from WIKI:
"Consumer advocate groups, such as the non-profit Consumers Union, advise against purchasing extended warranties. David Butler of the Consumers Union says, "The extended warranty is definitely in the best interest of the company, but isn't often in the best interest of the consumer." He adds, "The company is much more likely to profit from the extended warranty than the consumer is." In many cases, if the item does need repairing, the cost of repairs are less than the cost of the extended warranty. Other advocates also advise against purchasing extended warranties, maintaining that they are a cash cow for retailers, many of whom will refuse to repair items covered under such plans, if at all possible.[4]
Consumers Union says only two products deserve extended warranty consideration: projection TV's and digital camcorders. Both are expensive to repair and need repairs frequently.[5]"

A transmission grenades....1569.00 for thetransmission, no labor.
And I would much rather buy a used bike with an extended service plan / warranty or whatever you call it over one that didn't have it...and the H-D extendeds are transferable for free. So it is a good item to have if you sell the bike in the future SO that you can go buy another one.

The same question applies to almost anything you purchase of value. HDTV, major appliances, automobiles, etc. IMHO, if it is going to break, it will happen within the first year of use, assuming non-abusive use!

RE: Extended Warranty
I work at a Chev store. Definitely lots of people who purchase ext warrs and are never used, and lots that got their money's worth and then some. Here's my 2 cents...#1 If you can't pay cash for the bike and have to finance, how prepared are you in case you get a $1000-2000 repair bill?...#2 Warranties are a good profit center for the dealer, so like other things should also be able to be negotiated. I know if my Bus Mgr sells his warr at MSRP, he's happy, but is willing to sell at only a bit over cost if that's all he's gonna get---after all, you can take it or leave it, it's not like they won't sell you the bike without it.
Like I said to the guy, "if we can't strike a deal, the take the wife in and we'll "dicker"
