Default Security System Installation help??

I am contemplating the purchase of the HD Smart Security System, for my 08 RKC. I opted to take delivery without factory security installed. NOw I am thinking that I should add this feature.

What I really want to know is if this is something that I can install once purchased? What is involved ? I am mechanically inclined, so that would not be the issue. If it requires dealer installation and configuration, then I may talk with dealer prior to online purchase. My dealer has treated me well, but they cannot touch that savings.

I have found a pretty good deal on the unit, about HD off msrp. I think that the peace of mind, and the reduction in the insurance for having security would be money well spent.

Also, to those who have also installed the smart siren, is this something that is worth the money, or is it really just another toy that something more can go wrong.

No, bike did not come with security installed. I want to install it!!

Also, as long as I am going to do the security system install, I wanted opinions as to the use and/or purchase of the siren and if it is worth the additional cost.

I believe they have to teach the FOB's & enable it in the ECM.
You'll probably be better off going to a dealer for the entire install. I can't see more then an hour of labor charges.

The security system is standard on the bikes now. Leave your key in you house and go and start you bike. If it start you don't have a system. But if it start you take it back to the dealer and tell them to install because it standard.

It's a $345 option on the RKC, actually all touring models.

I got the phone with the stealerships here in Northern CA and they all stated that their bike come with security system. They did mention that you can order the bike with one and it take 3 weeks longer to get it. Enough beating this ded horse in the ground. The horn will indeed add mors security but I will check with your insurance compnay to see if the Horn will help if so it will pay for itself. I have a horn on alarm system on my bike.

You can install the system yourself not a big deal, but bike won't run until the dealer programs it to accept the security system. I rode mine to the dealer installed the system in the parking lot and pushed it inside for him to program. He charged me a half hour labor to do that. Saved a little money.
