Personally, I know I'm lugging mine when I tote the bitch up the steps!

Like another said, I have a RK Classic and don't have a tach, I just make sure I have adequate response if I have to throttle up. I donwnshift to accomplish this.

I reckon, like most bikers who are familar with their bike, I just have a "feel" for it.

Rather than doing it myself, I prefer the wife to do all the lugging on my engine.

I try not to drop below 2200 but the bike will run fine at 2000 on level ground and no passenger. Always downshift at that RPM if I want to accelerate for any reason.

ignore wherever you read 55 in 6th, that's crap. that definitely will lug your engine. 6th gear is right for about 70 up. My 08UC likes 5th gear to about 65 -70. 6th gear lower than 65 is about the lowest. 60 is really hurting your gas mileage in 6th, it may crusie at 60 but it's lugging in 60 too.
I'll go with that, on the way to work on one road I do about 45-50 in 4th steady, 50-65 in 5th steady, and when I hit the highway, its 70+ for 6th. I feel anything else lower is sort of a lug on the motor. (07 roadking)

I always keep it over 2K and don't use 6th until I'm over 65mph. Lack of response when turning it up usually means lugging imho.

A quote from an engine break in discussion...Lugging the engine, i.e., low RPM with a lot of throttle (manifold pressure), ...
