What consitutes a "Tourer", who sets the standards? I know someone who has the big 9 gallon tank BMW GS 1100 and he only goes 15 miles to work and back.
It would seem odd to have a touring bike to bar hop no? And cross country on a sportser has got to be brutal and I'm sure many have done it and many more will. Anything goes right, run what ya brung and all that.
Back roadsand interstates each bring there own brand of enjoyment. While you get there quicker on the Interstates you sure miss a lot of unique americanna on the back roads. Who would of thought just 20-30 miles outside of DC you would be in the middle of NFW(no f'ing where) its true if you take a country road out you'll see.
If you've never done this, one day have no destination in mind and head out for a day on country roads then camp or hotel and then head home. You'll find it'll be one of your most memorable rides.

At first I thought this was a "no duh" kind of thread and then reading responses I actually got to wondering... Kinda have to agree with badinfluence. I've ridden through 45 of the lower 48 at one time or another (never ridden in Maine, Iowa, or Nebraska) on highways and back roads. Done 3 different Iron Butt rides Saddlesore, Bun Burner, & Border to Border (Mexico to Canada in 33 1/2 hrs). Did all 11 MTN and PAC time zone states last summer in 3 weeks. I definitely enjoy long rides - known to ride 200-300 miles one way for a burger. Don't think any of that wouldqualify me as a "touring rider" though. I guess my definitionincludeslivingon the road for extended times. For that I'm gonna hafta wait until retirement.
In the meantime - see ya out there somewhere - collecting and swapping stories.
