In the early years of the NJSP, a Trooper's transportation was one of two things. He was issued either a motorcycle or a horse, both of which he rode year-round. New Jersey winters on a Harley. Brrrrrr..........
The French Blue leather overcoats worn for winter motorcycle duty back then, like the one in the 1933 photo seen below, were purchased directly from Harley-Davidson.

I have a cousin that is a State Trooper in NC. He is a moto-cop. They ride some sort of BMW. Year round rider unless terrible weather...thunderstorm, snow, etc.
They use heated clothes, grips, etc. But still anything below 20 is cold........

As messed up as the traffic is in No. Va. and all of DC area, probably only way to get a fast response and get there quickly is on a bike. I have seen accidents and traffic was backed up for miles and they go flying between the cars to get to it. I am glad they are there to help us winter cagers.

It's not smart Police policy to have your guys ride in those conditions. A lot of agencies require motor cops park the bikes when the temps get into the 30's and check out a patrol car. For those of us that ride our Harleys in cold temps its a different thing and you can get away with it. But motorcops have all sorts of added hazards and responsibilities. They are risking the chance of having their names added to the Law Enforcement Memorial Wall by riding like that. Your reaction time is not the same and your mind is not 100% in the game.
