Until someone can discount this method, here is what I hold as the recommended way: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I'm more on the glide program above... I let it warm up and ride it a bit (10 min easy)then total cool down. You will feel it get hot and it will be tight. Then I will do some easy roll on and offs for 10 minutes after warm up.cool down. Then medium roll on and offs. Cool down. Then harder. Cool down. Then harder. Cool down. Then I change the oil. I've done more than one this way and then put many trouble free, strong running miles on this way. They never have burned any oil between changes either. Like someone else said it's your 20 grand though. The first one I did this way I admit I was nervous and timid... Now I look forward to it.

I have Broke in several bikes and ride easy for first few hundred miles then Ride normal. They were all import bikes, You know the MoCo has been doing this for a long time and my SG is getting done by the book!

you'll find some metal with the first change, but not much thereafter.
S&S recommends the first change at 50 miles!

had a 103 built when i bought my 08 glide new. the hi po builder said the manual was ultra conservative. he said to just ride it normally. no lugging or overreving. then change oil at 1000. i've had no problems on two previous bikes this way.

Just curious for some education. What does lugging the engine do during break-in? Alot of post say not too, plus the dealer said not too.

thank you to all who responded. I tend to lean towards the moco break-in instructions....Once again great information on this forum. Can't tell you how many people I suggest join this group.
You got that right. All this "ride it like you stole it" stuff is bravado. It's your bike and you will live with the results.

The people who developed the motor know what's best, so break it in by the book.

It's very hard on the bottom end bearings etc.

Listen.
Bearings need nothing but lubrication. If you have oil and the pump is working, they will get that.
What is truly important is Ring Seating.
This occurs during the 1st miles.

Your dealer has a dyno and doesnt use it to break in bikes?
That tells me that your dealer is running about 20 years in the past as far as technological thinking goes.
If you got to my dealer and buy a new bike, they will ask you if yiou are planning on doing any mods.
If you say that you are, they will sell them to you at 20% discount at time of sale, install them, and the break your bike in on the dyno, change the oil and roll it out the door.
When they roll it out to you, you are told to ride it like you want to, just dont lug it.

When they build your bike at the factory, they redline the engine to test it.
