I did something similar.... but I used a washer and a nut instead of the wingnut. You need a wrench to pull it out. I also used a locking washer to keep it in place. No longer a quick release... but that is what I was trying to get rid of.
I read another post about a guy who used a couple of u bolts, drilled a few holes in the bottom of the bag, fastened the u bolts around the bottom rail, with the nuts inside the bag. Just another thought... besides, drain holes for the melted ice is a plus... just sayin'...
A lot of good ideas here replacing the quick clip. The biggest advantage I see to this mod is it has to be a stronger link and the twist pins. The bike and me this weekend in the garage for a little bag mod. Thanks guys.
Before leaving for Sturgis, I bolted mine in so the nylon lined nut was on the inside of the bag and the rounded allen head was behind the strut. Nottrue theif-proof, but at least it's more time consuming. And the truth be know theives are like bullies, they only want to tackle the easy stuff. It did notget in the way for anything I stuffed in the bag and really brought me piece of mind. I went last time without doing thisand just felt a ton easier this time.
