Default Dumb Question About Fairing Brackets

Ok, how do you tell if the fairing brackets are broken? Since the fairing is attached to the handlebars, how would one know?

My fairing started vibrating really badly at idle. I didn't really think much about it. I finally had to take the fairing front off to find an electrical short and found 3 of the 4 brackets broken. One to the speaker area and both of the vertical black ones to the forks. That was after 1 year, 10,000 miles. They had probably been broken for some time. I fixed them myself rather than fooling with days in the service dept. for warranty fix.

This is how i was told.
Stand on the left side of the bike, grab the left grip with your right hand. Put your left hand on the left edge of the fairing. Push on the fairing, pull on the handlebar. Repeat on the other side. If there is any appreciable movement the bracket is probably broken.

Some times you can push on the outer fairing and see if it moves more than the inner. Other than that I would remove the outer fairing and just look at the brackets, it will be pretty obvious. The outer fairing is pretty simple to remove, a little tough to get around the spot lights if you have them, just cover them with a rag to prevent scratches. The paint on them is pretty tough, sot don't be afraid to put a little pressure on the fairing when removing and installing.

Best way to check if pull the fairing. You've been dying to pull it off anyway, right?

Take a look at this thread and the other mentioned in my last post.
https://www.hdforums.com/m_2367351/m...tm.htm#2469829

freyca has made a repair SS piece in this.

There are two other vertical brackets in the threads that break occassionally.

search:fairing bracket, etc

Hope this helps....

noticed a vibration that was a little more than usual, decided to pull the fairing, brackets were okay but one of the bolts had came loose and fell out when I took the fairing off. I checked all of the nuts and bolts and many were loose.

Have them welded and re-inforced. Stronger than replacing them with stock.

You would be suprized how many dressers have them broken and dont know it.
