Default Oil temp gauge question

I see where a lot of folks swap their fairing air temp gauge for an oil temp gauge. My dealer wants four hours labor to install the oil temp gauge in the fairing. My question is wouldn’t it make more sense to buy the crankcase temp/level gauge (#63046-07) instead of paying four hours labor to install the gauge in the fairing? I realize I’d have to stop to read the oil temp, but I shouldn’t have to worry about oil temp if I’m moving. The crankcase gauge costs a few dollars less and also indicates oil level. Thanks

Read this forum about the dipstick gauges: https://www.hdforums.com/m_1680016/tm.htm
Kept me from buying one.

Why not install the gauge yourself. Comes with directions less than 2 hrs.

Install the guage yourself. It's a fairly simple job.

That guage install shouldnt take more than 90 minutes!
Install the guage, run the wire...wait until youre ready to change the oil to install the sensor.
90 flippin minutes...TOPS!

You're stealership is trying to stroke you!

Reading some of the old posts it sounds like a challenge to install using HD's method, but it may provide the most accurate indication. I haven't done anything but check the tire pressure and oil level so far. I'm a little nervous about taking things apart on a new bike, but I guess it's time to start tinkering. Thanks for the info on the LED dipstick problems.

When you install it, don't install it the way the dealer would which I believe is in an oil line. Install it in the bottom of the oil pan. I think the reason they quoted you 4 hours was because they were going to install it the HD way. You are much better off to use the pan.

I bought a kit that came with the guage, sender, and wiring. Took me 2 hours max to pull the fairing, install the guage, sender, and wiring loom. I would wait until an oil change is due so you can drain your oil at the same time.

Just my 2 cents.

Installing the sensor the MoCo way is a PITA. Most of us have installed the sensor in the second plug hole in the oil pan. You can even do it with a full crank of oil with minimal oil loss. You will need to pick up an adapter to mate the sensor to the oil pan. I went to NAPA and picked one up. It is #3220 x 6 x 2. When I installed the oil guage in the fairing, I swapped it out with the fuel gauge and put the fuel gauge in the air temp spot. I ran the wire from the fairing down along the clutch cable, along the bottom frame rail then 90* over to the oil pan.

I may be able to figure this out by looking under the bike, but when you install the sensor in the oil pan, is there a "clean" way to route the wire? Thanks

Yes, on right side of bike...run wire alongside all those other wires that are at rear of trans side cover.

If you want to take an additional 30 minutes...lift your tank and run the wire with the harness. Wire tie along the way.
