Alaska 2008

RE: Alaska 2008
I always thought about driving to the Seattle area and then taking a boat ride to Alaska. Not sure if it would save any time but sounds kind of neat. Besides that way I would have a sidearm for a little protection against varmits.
By looking at a map there isn't a whole lot of gas stops( or any other kind for that matter ) north of Fairbanks. Are you planning on taking fuel cells with you?

I did San Diego to Fairbanks (and back!!)4 yrs ago on a Heritage Softtail.....Late June start and almost 4 weeks on the trip.....
What worked for me was to ride to Seattle (Bellingham actually) and my girlfriend flew there to meet me.....We goton the Alaska Ferry, loaded the bike and got a cabin.......Took the ferry to Skagway (4 days), road two up to Fairbanks and spent about a week there doing Denali, etc.......Then she flew home from Fairbanks and I rode home, taking my time......
This really broke the trip up for me and I am tenatively planning again late June this year, this time on the Ultra......I would do the ferry boat again with a cabin, altho they allow and encourage camping on deck........
Trip of a lifetime and once you do it you will be planning the next trip up.......

After leaving Skagway you go right into Canada.......
If you take a firearm, which I did, do not take a handgun.....Altho I am licensed in all 50 states to carry one concealed, I am not in Canada.....Their laws are much more restrictive ref handguns than ours.......If you get caught with one, they get upset ........
I took an AR-7 (I think that is the model designator)....A 22 cal rifle that breaks down and everything goes into the stock......When I declared this at the border they did not even blink an eye........
I went in late June which worked well.......A bit of mist and snow leaving Skagway, other than that did not use the rainsuit at all until returning and back in the states......near 80 degrees in Fairbanks, mosquitoes not a problem for me this early.....Alot of gravel, but most (not all) is 50 mph gravel....
