Default Getting Ready For A Cam Swap

Well, after reading all the threads on the forum about bad cam chain tensioners and having 35,000 miles on my 2000 FLH, I am getting ready to open the cam cover up and take a look. At this point I figure if I am going to remove the exhaust and open it up, I might as well install a set of Andrews 26G cams. Sounds like a lot of you have good things to say about the 26G’s.

Anyone have any tips on the best place to buy the 26G’s with the gears and all, looking for a complete kit. Would also like to replace the pushrods with a good set of adjustables, so would be great to find a kit that includes new pushrods as well. If not, any recommendations on adjustable push rods and where to get them. While I have it apart I plan to replace my blueing DS Street Sweeper Slip on’s with a set of Vance and Hines Oval slip on’s and installing a PCIIIusb. Sounds like FuleMoto is the best choice for the PCIII??

Any input would be greatly appreciated

I have a 2000. I put in 26G's. My bike ran great with the Stage I, stock headpipes, and slip ons. Later down the road, I put on True Duals. the bike ran good, but was lacking on the bottom and mid range. I added a DFO to enrichen the fuel circuit. It worked well for me. I have great throttle response and still get good gas mileage. I've been running this set up for a couple of years and have put 17k miles on it. I'm happy with the results.

check your runout before you order gears, Bikes newer than about 2002 have more runout than previous years, if you have more than. 003 I would strongly urge you to reconsider. .003 is the absolute max you can have without lots of noise and possibilitys of problems down the road. If your runout is good go for it.

what are the potential problems that you are referring to duke76? isnt the noise inherent and unavoidable with any gear setup regardless of runout? please inform...thank you

More crank runout = more cam gear noise due to tight and loose gear mesh due to crank gear "walking" back and for due to the runout. If you have a 2000 you migh tbe just fine. It is something you should check though. And cam gar noise is avoidable if runout is low and the backlash is set up right.

dalton hit the nail on the head, If your crank runout is about nothing and you set your other gears backlash correct, it is very possible that your gear drive wont be any louder than stock

If you are going with adjustable pushrodsyou shouldget a kit that includes the pushrod covers with it. The stock covers make it a bitch to adjust the pushrods. Again if the run-out is over .003" you should address that before you install the gear drive.
