1000 mile service...Houston we have a problem
Took the new 08 SG in for it's 1000 mile service and SERT dyno tune. First comes the dyno tune. Around 50HP I'm told. Obviously something is wrong. I'm asked if the bike hasn't felt sluggish. Not to me and I have an 02 95" so i think I have some feel for power. The 96 has seemed fine. Further investigation shows two quarts of oil in the crankcase. Don't ask as I have no clue what they're talking about. Something about there being a difference between the oil pan and crankcase. Of course there is! Dealer thinks an o-ring has been pinched and while on the dyno said o-ring may have been pushed out allowing oil into the crankcase where it is allowing the flywheel to be drenched in oil and fighting to make power but can't. Whatever. Tomorrow they are going to start tearing it down. Just what I wanted to do to my new bike. If it is what they suspect they will get right down to removing the cam plate. I figured on doing the BB after running the bike for a year. But if they're getting down to the cams I think I should go ahead and replace them with the SE255 keeping my warranty in effect. I must admit I am now seriously worried about what kind of bike I got. Several small things have cropped up. I wasn't too worried about those things but something screwed up down inside the engine is all together something else. Can anybody say anything to make me feel better.

RE: 1000 mile service...Houston we have a problem
When we discovered that my '08 Road Glide shipped with porous cases I was crushed and pretty mad until my dealer got behind me and provided the reassurance that they and MoCo would make everything to my satisfaction. Since they had to rebuild the engine from the cases up, I took advantage of the "free" warranty labor and installed the 103" Big Bore Kit for just the cost of the parts. The bike runs so well now that I think the porous cases were a great thing despite the bike being down a week for the rebuild. As you suggest, perhaps now is a good time to take advantage of some free labor...

Yikes....Dont get all worked up over this. As long as the staff in the service dept....including the service manager know what their job, you you will be happy. Look here is what I used to tell people when I was working as a tech at a jap dealership....and I will tell you the same thing.
God didn't make the bike....people did, and sometimes people make mistakes....its normal and to be expected, and I am sure you knew about that when you bought the bike, or why would it come with a warranty. Lots of times it will take 1 or 2 thousand miles to get the bugs worked out. One good thing though......this will be the acid test for your choice of service departments. If the boys in the SD do a good job, and make you happy (and I think they will) you will then know that you have a knowledgeable, and willing to help type of place. If they start to give you too much static, with the "thats normal" BS line.....or anything else that you find unsatisfactory (within reason....some folks are just ****), you can make a move to a better SD in your area. If thats the case go in and ask to speak to the SM and SR. Introduce yourself, and tell them your story. Tell them that you didn't buy the bike there, but because the SD staff over at XXXX-HD were not doing the right thing as far as your concerned, you needed to find a quality place where they know how to turn a wrench....and like it. I am not sure where your from, but remember the place where your bike is right now is not the only game in town....and no matter how good a job they do, there will always be a place where the work is of higher quality.
Just remember its only a MC, and anything at all that fails can and will be fixed, and made better than it was stock!

Completely agree with whats already been said. Since it looks like they are going to tear it down, you might as well do the upgrades, save some dough and get it under warranty.
This could end up being a really good thing, so stay positive.

Make them give you a loaner. My bike is my primary vehicle. If they're taking it out of service for a week or more, they should be prepared to put me on something else. I spent more for my bike than I did for my car, and I do between 3x and 4x the miles on the bike than in the car. Beyond that, just remember... **** happens and as long as they're taking care of it, you're golden.
