RE: WATER SOFTNERS = RUST??????
Salt doesn't go into the water. It is used to flush the softener out to clean the particulate inside. Very little salt makes it into the water, or it would not be drinkable. We washed our frontline firetruck&ambulance every day with softened water, they didn't rust

Yes, ion/cation exchange water softeners do increase the salt content of your water...Is it enuff to cause rusting?....Not unless your softener is malfunctioning....It is possible to inject pure brine into the household water system if the softener fails to properly rinse/flush upon regeneration.
I use 2 tons of salt/month in my boiler water treatmentsoftener/dealkalizer, so I know a little about how they work.

As others have said, a properly operating softener won't cause a problem. Ah've been dealin' with 'em fer 31 years......
As fer bypassin' the softener when washin' the car, that's counter-productive. Soft water will do a better job of cleanin' AND reduce spotting severity.
