I have heard that a car battery that was run down quickly should be recharged quickly while one that was run down slowly should be recharged slowly.
Recharging any battery quickly can warp the plates and render it useless by shorting them out. Slow charge is best.

A rundown battery usually will live a shorter life span than one that has been properly charged thorugh it's life.

Glide, I have charged car batteries using 6-10 amp charging rates since 1958 withouthaving any problems with battery life. That was what I meant by quick charge vs 1.25 amps for a Battery Tender. Are you saying that 6 to 10 amps for a car battery charge is bad?

The smaller trickle chargers of the 10 amp top charge (not the battery tenders) are best for charging with the tapering charge rates. The bigger chargers like used in repair shops are the problem with quick charging. The heat generated with those doing a quick charge will damage a battery and shorten it's life , possibly short it out when it is charged fast.

Battery temps should be monitored when recharging to make sure it isn't heating up. If heat is felt, disconnect the charger and let it cool before continuing the charging.

When ever a battery is drained down to dead has a chance of shorting out a cell. It's best to trickle charge it back to life and do a load test. Since most batteries are sealed it's a lot of trouble to check the gravity in each cell. Keeping on a tender with a desulfer is about the best.

Change the battery at your leisure, or change the battery at it's leisure...
I prefer mine, as I hate getting stuck anywhere...
