Default wiring cig lighter to battery

I've rigged up an after market cig lighter and plan to attach it straight to my battery. I installed a 20 A fuse in the positive wire of the rig. Ya'll reckon this will be okay? I want to have power, even when the bike's ignition is turned off off. I plan to use it for my GPS and Cell phone.

Don't see a problem with it. What size wire did you use, 12awg or 14?

Not sure, it was the wire that came with the cig lighter. It was a deal where you had two lighters come out of one so you could power two accessories in at once. I just cut one of 'em off and rigged it up with in-line fuse and terminals so I can bolt to the battery. The wire of the fuse holder is larger, though and the fuse is 20 amp.

20 amps sounds a bit large for a gps and cellphone. I'm guessing they would draw a fraction of that.

You're probably right, Weasel. I guess I need to find about the draw for my GPS and Cell and go down to a smaller fuse, huh?

I think you would be fine. Had a similar hookup for a few years, but I was actually using it as a lighter, not for GPS.

Last weekend I purchased the 12volt accessory plug ($17) that HD sells. Plugs in to the accessory socket by the battery. Worked well after I cut it and lengthened the wires.

consider much smaller fuse rating and placement of fuse close to power source...20A sounds large.
carry spares in your bag.

The fuse is to protect the wire size not what is plugged into the lighter.Where did you mount it? I currently plug my Tenders directly on the Starter wire.
