Default Best deal I got for a StreetGlide, and what would it cost to make one??

Did some end of year shopping yesterday and the best deal I had found expired on Xmas Eve. Boston Harley was doing MSRP (you had to get the security system) NO Setup or Freight, and $500 gift cert to the store..I missed out.

Manchester Harley will order me a Cobalt Streetglide for Feb delivery for 18820, out the door. Which is MSRP (Injected) 100 doc fee and 320 setup. I think this is a very good deal...It was a toss up between the SG and RoadGlide and I just think the SG looks badass...so I'm ALMOST there to go smack down my deposit..and I start to think...What would it cost to make one?? I don't care about the boards the SG's have..but I'm talking about the rest.

I can see myself getting a tourpack for my Streetglide down the road, so has anyone priced out what an Ultra Classic conversion would run?? You'd need a new front fender to lose the lights and decorations...lower it, so some shocks right? Get a detachable kit for the tourpack, and some body colored parts here and there...the LED taillight is cool..but doesn't have to be done...It may work out to be cheaper going this route and ending up with a tourpack..so who's done the math and parts list?

I feel it would be cheaper. Most change the o.e. shocks to Progressives anyway. You could sell any take offs such as light bar on e-bay. Also most customize bike to their own liking, adding polished billet bag latches and putting on different seats. You can do the quik detachables for tour pak. To each their own. The Street Glide is nice but you pay a premium because its new. I bought the standard and have less money in it than most and have big bore etc. at 96 horse.

That's pretty much what I was thinking...just curious on the cost of a new fender etc....good point on the selling of stuff...could dump all the stock take offs on ebay and pay for a portion of the new parts..

Hm..one other thing I thought of..do the motors on the UCs come in black/chrome or alum/chrome? I hate the look of the alum/chrome they're doing now..

IF YOU ARE TRYING TO MAKE A CLASSIC OR ULTRA OUT OG THESTREET GLIDE YOU ARE BETTER OFF BUYING AN ULTRA TO START WITH. THE OPTIONAL RADIO TO ULTRA LEVEL IS JUST OVER 1,000.00, THE TOURPAK WITH HARDWARE IS ALMOST A THOUSAND AND YOU STILL DONT HAVE LOWERS WHICH IS ABOUT 750.00. THE CRUISE CONTROL MODULE IS 450.00 AND YOU STILL DONT HAVE THE CB. A NEW ACCOMODATING WIRING HARNESS WILL SET YOU BACK NEAR 500.00. NOW YOU HAVE A BOTCHED UP BIKE WORTH CONSIDERABLY LESS THAN THE ORIGINAL STREET GLIDE. I USE TO WORK AT A DEALER AND ONE OF OUR CUSTOMERS WANTED HIS ROAD GLIDE EQUIPPED LIKE AN ULTRA. HE ENDED UP WITH OVER 2,000.00 MORE THAN AN ULTRA COSTS. HE JUST LIKED THE FAIRING THAT CAME ON THE ROAD GLIDE AND HAD A LOT OF MONEY.

I lost you hear, but I think you're saying my idea isn't a bad one? What do you mean the optional radio to ultra level? That's another thing I'd want on my Streetglide is cruise control..I didn't realize it would cost that much for the module!

Mack, polite comment: All caps is considered shouting in forums and chat rooms, some folks take great offense. I have no issues, but thought you'd like to know.

As to the SG question. If you're tending to all the Ultra accessories, it's probably going to be cheaper to start there and remove stuff. Fender packages (including some hardware to take off the rear bumper, do a thread search, they talk about it in Touring), suspension kits, quick detach for the tour pak, including harness disconnects for the intercom and rear speakers (which may be integral on the UC), new windscreen if you want to lower it, seat change (maybe, and you might change the SG seat as well), some other odds and ends...Versus new tour pak and necessary hardware, cruise control, CB/intercom and necessary hardware (the tank console has to be changed), speakers and wiring harness for rear speakers and intercom connection, fairing lowers, possibly XM module (does the UC come with XM?), saddlebag guards, again with the odds and ends. The aftermarket money spent will be lower to remove than add. If you really want to compare though, you'd have to work up the cost sheet on aftermarket mods for both, and then compare base bike price difference. My feeling is that you'll be ahead with the UC, but...

The other factor that comes in are paint scheme choices, UCs and SGs have different paint possibilities so that's worth considering.

That having been said, if you just want a tour pak, and maybe cruise control...you're closer to the break-even point between the two bikes. So...How much UC stuff do you ultimately want?

I do know converting a EG Standard to the SG is more expensive, I did that workup. Radio and speakers alone spank you pretty hard on that switch.

Good luck, and let us know.

Lucky for me the color I want is available in the UC...Cobalt. Tank graphics are different, but not biggie there. Pretty much the only thing I would want on the UC is the cruise and the tourpack. It would probably only be used 1 or 2 times a year if that, but it would sure come in handy and be nice for the long trips. The radio would be a nice to have upgrade too, I don't think I would buy it specifically to upgrade the one on the streetglide, but again, a nice little perk. I'm guessing a UC would be discounted a little better than the Streetglide too.

Looks like I've got some calling to do today.

I'd not give up on the idea that you can get a great deal on a Street Glide. Harley dealers are flush with bikes, and will get more interested in doing deals as we folks in the north get into the depths of winter. I was at one of the three HD dealers here in central OH last week, and while looking over some of their bikes, had a sales person tell me that if I didn't see what I liked on the floor, they had a warehouse full out back. Another of the dealers here has so many bikes in stock that they've closed off customer access to the service area so no one will see that they have bikes still in the crates stacked to the ceiling.

The supply/demand pendelum has swung from being in the favor of HD dealers to being in favor of the buyers. My guess is that if you think that deal you quoted was a good one, then if you pull out you checkbook, they'll still honor it. It's at least worth making the offer and being willing to walk away. My guess is that you'll get a call back within a week.

The other thing that's happened is that HD built lots of dealerships in the past couple of years (just so they could stuff inventory on them, in my opinion). If your closest dealer won't give you what you want, and you're willing to drive a little, my guess is that there is some relatively new dealer somewhere close to you who is carrying big inventory and a lot of startup costs, and would absolutely be willing to deal.

HD did a great job of marketing over the past decade or so, and knew how to keep supply constrained enough to intice all of us to pay premiums for our bikes. There is no longer a shortage of supply of HD motorcycles, and no reason to pay a premium any more. It wouldn't hurt many HD dealers to work hard for customers for a change.

Couldn't agree more. It's funny how 2 mths ago, they were getting 2100 on top of MSRP for the SGs..now they are doing them at MSRP and waiving setup and shipping. Actually, this dealership has always been upfront and actually told me come back in the winter, don't buy one now.

Just cruise and the tour pak? SG might be cheaper to get what you want with the look you want. Let us know what your calls reveal!

Another thought, if you're just looking for something to give you some space on long trips, look at a T-Bag touring bag, you could end up with more space, and less money out of pocket for those couple of times a year you wanna really pack it up and tour.
