Never had a 1st gear whine on my 07. Must be a new thing.....for the 08's. Get louder mufflers and heavier tranny fluid.

 

Got about 1300 miles on my 08 Ultra Anniversary, I noticed 1st and 5th for a little while, 5th still makes a little different sound so I can tell I'm in 5th but its not a bother. Did the stage-1 upgrade at the 1k service and went to Syn3, between the Vance and Hines slip-ons and the synthetic oil almost no noticable tanny sound now. As others mentioned the key fob takes a little getting used to, especially when moving it around or working on it in the garage. Am planning to add the rest of the security system (siren and pager) next spring unless I find a different security system I like better. Was able to notice a little heat when going into city traffic after being out on the highway, but not enough to make me really want heat shields. Only problem now is that its winter and the bike is in hybernation for at least a few months.

I noticed the noise in 1st on the 07's we rented in Hawaii....didn't notice the noise in 5th on either. Have my 25% off coupon for the dealer this weekend...from what has been said here the SERT is looking like a good investment.

 

I put Redline Shockproof Heavy gear oil in my 06 SG that had a whine in 5th and the noise was gone in a couple hundred miles. Mine's a 5 speed but worked great for me. You might consider the change after the break in.

Yea, get the siren add-on for the security system. Without it, the alarm system just flashes lights and disables the starter; doesn't really draw much attention. However, with the siren, somebody sits on the bike and lifts it off the jiffystand or they "jiggle" the bike, then it chirps at them twice and then will alarm after the 2nd chirp. Probably won't stop anybody from stealing it that really wants it, but it might stop some a$$wipe from sitting on or movingyour bike when you aren't around.

 

Picked up my 2008 Ultra last Tuesday. I have about 150 miles on her today. No special gear noise or excessive heat. Had the premium oil cooler installed by the dealer because of all the heat related posts on this forum. Also ordered mine with ABS and the HD security system as well andI really like the key fob so far.No problems here.
