Default tuners (Or lack Thereof)

Okay, being new to Harley, I have been reading on this board for about two weeks and realize that I have to ask probably a very stupid question to some. With all of the different opinions on different tuners and such, is it necessary to do any of these things? Or, is it just trying to squeeze more juice from the fruit? Realistically, the only thing I would like to change is putting true duals on my EG. Do I have to buy a tuner or download just to do that?

Like I say, probably a stupid question to some. I would appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

It is necessary for a optimal running condition. With the installation of free flowing exhaust, it will cause your air/fuel mixture to be leaner than what is optimal, causing problems such as a hotter running motor (temp), popping/backfire thru the intake, and poor acceleration. Bikes are normally set up lean from the factory in order to pass EPA standards, so adding exhaust without either rejetting a carb model or remapping a EFI model wouldnt be recommended.

Mike,

With the true duals you will "really" need a tuner. It changes things more than just slip ons or other exhausts. To enhance your true duals you will at least want to put on the SE Air Cleaner upgrade to get the air flowing. The Harley Race Tuner (SERT) or the Power Commander (PCIII) are good choices. This is not Harley Hipe since you are going to be running an "after market" exhauste. I rune the Rinehart True Duals and love them. The best way to make your bike run like it should with the mods you are talking about is to install the tuner and have it dyno'd. You can get the PCIII or SERT online (M&M Cycles or Eastern Performance Cycles) and save a bunch of money. The same thing goes for your True Duals. Eastern Performance Cycles sells both V&H and Rinehart.

Good luck with whatever your decide.

Thanks guys,

I really appreciate the feedback presented on this board. I'll keep studying and watching the replies on here. I have not gotten past the first 1000 mile checkup yet, so , I have a little time.
My 06 Ultra Classic sure is beautiful, but, it just doesn't sound like the true harley it should be yet. You know what I mean?

Thanks,

Mike

As said above, I would go ahead and put in a good air cleaner unit when you change out the exhaust and yes I would put in a aftermarket tuner of some type so the bike can be tuned to what it has.

Ditto above use a programmer of some sort and change the intake while your at it

Make sure to do some research on true duals to make sure you still want to go.

Type in the search True Duals or Rineharts to find all sorts of information.

I just got my rineharts, stage 1 and SERT and man what a big difference. It was worth every penny. When you do it hold on to the bike it almost threw me off. Good luck.

I agree James. That's the way I felt too. If it's tuned properly you are gonna notice a big difference. I did not notice any loss in torque, did you?
