RE: New Road King Power (96) , vs. Older 88
Compare 88/96 with or without Stage 1, but not one with and the other without. The 96" engine has a meaningful increase in low-end torque, but little more HP. Run them full-out (e.g. 1/4-mile) and there would likely be little difference, as the bigger engine doesn't produce that much more peak HP. Punch from 2000-2500 in 4th or 5th gear and the 96" will likely walk away.
When I rode a demo 2007 RK in August of last year I noticed three things in that short 5-mile ride: The improvement in low-end torque, smoother operation, and clattering in higher gears. The first was impressive enough for me to contemplate selling my '96 RK, which I thought I would never do. I did it only three months later, and I'm still impressed with this engine when properly tuned (PCIII, AC, slip-ons, and a good map). The last was also an issue with my '07 SG but has been fixed by installing IDS.

I have an '06 RKC (88 inch) with slip ons, PC III, and an A/N big sucker stage II with roughly 80H.P. and 80TQ. Recently while on an Iron Butt ride my two buddies had been needling each other about who was the fastest. One has an 07 Ultra with a PC III, slip ons, and a K & N A/C while the other has an 03 Electra Glide Standard with a screaming eagle 95 c.i. big bore. I knew I had know chance against the 95 c.i. but I wanted to know how well the '07 ran, so when they twisted it at 50mph so did I. Well, like I said the 95c.i. ran off like we were sittin' still but the '07 just kind of stayed there just in front of me, and after awhile I realized I was actually gaining on him. Then I saw him look in his mirror and he backed off. when we got home my bud with the '07 spent a little cash to help his 96 out but I still don't think he can run with 95c.i.

Just traded my 04 RG in on an 08 RG. My 04 had the stage two 95 kit in it. It ran rather well. I have only tested the 96in for about 15 miles, it seemed a little capped up with everything being stock. But I am looking at the other upgrades that I will get with the 08. Larger tank, six speed, motor black powder coated and a motor that can easily be punched up to a 103. Not to mention the color selection with stripe that actually is lined up.
