Patriot HD (N VA) is asking for $495 for the IDS and intallation.
Sounds like a good reason to never walk through their doors!

and thats why they enjoy a reputation as a 'stealer'. hell, i've even heard bad things about them, and i live in louisiana! there is no reason to charge 2 hrs + for labor on that item. i got mine done the same time as a tire change and was only charged 1/2 hr labor. (special, free labor on tire change)....

Had IDS installed at my dealer under the "elbow grease" program. IDS = $305, Installation = 1 Hr/$85, less $100 elbow grease, plusshop supplies (Locktite?)and tax = $318.xx out the door. Took the bike on a 2200 mile trip the next day. I love IDS and I had no noisesor clunks in my 07 SG.

The 08 harley labor rate book allows for 1 hour to install the IDS. Most dealers have a $70.00 per hour rate charge. If they charge you for any labor or shop supplies under the 100.00 elbow grease programthey are SCREWING YOU. Most dealers also have discount coupons from time to time. I had a 20% off one item coupon and used it to purchase IDS, and took it aaround to service department and made my deal with them for no cost installation before I let them do it. Don't let them put it to you....Bldr

You are absolutlely correct, Jap bikes had cush drive way back when Adam rode a tricycle and I think most still do. I had a Yamaha XJ900 shaft drive some years back due to the cush drive set up and it being a bit worn if you really gave it a fist full in 1st gear it would actually jump a notch every now and then.
The Honda ST1100 ( Pan Euro ) actually has three seperate rubber absorbtion systems in the drive line, that's why they are so smooth to ride.

I don't normally advertise for 'stealers" but Dallas Harley Davidson (who I said good things about once before) is running a promotion on top of "Elbow Grease". They will sell you the IDS for $305.00, plus install, minus $100.00 and on top of that, give you a $100.00 gift card. Net out of pocket $205 for installed IDS.

I went to a primary belt instead of a chain on my 1977 Super glide which eliminated the compensator sprocket and replaced it with just a nut and pulley. The bike ran smootherthe belt and I never had any problems with it.

Forgive me if I am wrong here, but haven't the japs been using some sort of rubber insert in the rear hub as a dampening device for the drive-line since back in the 70's?
Cush drive was pioneered by Royal Enfield in 1912, and they held the patent for years, now presumably expired.
