timing chain tensoiners

RE: timing chain tensoiners
Is the procedure for the shoe replacement in the service manual or is this one of those "technician know how" type of jobs?
I don't have a service or parts manual yet, I plan to for Christmas.
Also, what"s the ball park estimate, $$$, for parts on this? I plan on shade treeing it myself. Not sure I'm interested in gear drives at this point.
I have 27k on my Ultra, and if I am tearing down that far to inspect, I am just going to replace them while I'm in there.
Thanks-a-mundo!

the tensioners are $30 each, gasket $4, the outer bearing (that I had to pound on to get the cam out) $12, plus 4 o rings , 2 snap rings and 2 valve cvr gaskets $16= $80 total parts. I would recommend snapping the push rods with bolt cutters and replacing them with adjustable. You will save 3 hours of labor and $10 for gaskets for $68 a set of adjustable push rods.

Got the cover off, outer tensoiners look good. Money is tight, so gear drive is out of the question, will pull the cam plate out & check the inner and replace them. Will defenitly replace push rods with adjustables. Any preferances out there? Aluminum or Chrome Moly? Thanks

Mine has 32k and no noise yet, nor any sign of a problem in the oil filter, and last time I looked the outer tensioner looked pretty good. But, for me it's time for a change, so my geared cams, lifters, pushrods, etc. are at the local UPS waiting for delivery to my door next Monday. No sense worrying about tensioners any more.

Well, got it tore down to the bearings. Previous owner said that the cam bearings were the updated ones when he did the 95 conversion and cams. Inner bearings are the INA's and not the Torringtons. Still good, but will change them to the Torringtons anyway. One question though, are the cams pressed into the bearings? One of mine slides in & out. I even pulled the cam & inner chain off by hand, is that normal?
