questions about clutch disks
Last week My bike just stopped moving, clutch. So I had a extended warranty, took it to the dealer. Big surprise, not covered disks were burnt? My question is how could this happen? I've never burnt a clutch out in 15 years of riding. It didn't slip or anything just quit. I just changed from syn3 in all 3 holes to Mobil 1 20w50in the crankcase and 75w90 in the tranny. I put hdformula + in the primary.I just changed it 1400 miles ago. The clutch had a bad burnt smell when it was changed at the dealer. Could this change effect the clutch. I cancelled the warranty, so I'm just trying to understand what happened, because big surprise the dealer doesn't know. Thanks for your knowledge.

RE: questions about clutch disks
I dont think switching oils would be the cause.Maybe miliage(wear and tear),inproper clutch adjustment, low primary fluid, riding style would be the cause.
The clutch is a wear item same as brake pads etc-.
I think the dealershould have explained this to you.

RE: questions about clutch disks
harley504: What Extended Warranty do you have? I ask because I have the HD Extended Service Plan and in Section 4 it says the "primary drive" is covered; and, the primary drive includes the clutch. So, if I was in you shoes, I'd ask the dealer for a written explanation for refusing to cover the repair.
As for the exclusion of "wear" items, there is no such exclusionary term in my ESP and my cam chain tensioners were replaced under the ESP and those are certainly a "wear" item.
It's a pain, perhaps, but when all else fails, read the contract, in this case, the "Extended Warranty" anddon't accept a verbal statement thatthe necessary repair is not covered.

RE: questions about clutch disks
Even though HD does recommend Syn 3 in primary, from what I've read.
sometimes it may be too slick.
also if the disks are actully burnt and no friction material left, I would look at clutch adjustment.
Can't remember the brand, but J&P sells it.
Adds an extra friction disk and eliminates the tapered spring in bottom of clutch pack.
About a $100 if I remember right.
