You're right... the stock setup is junk, undoubtedly by design so you can buy another, more expensive one. In a pinch... (you said it), tie it on good 7 tight w/zipstraps.

Black Electrical tape will hold it for a couple of miles....Bldr

Two zip ties held mine for over 1000 miles till I bought a replacement.

I replaced mine with the $86 one years ago.

However in a pinch you can use zip ties, tie wire, and duct tape. These are all standard items for Alaska bikers. Many times you can find the wire you need by the side of the road. A buddy did one late summer night while having to shoo the black bears away.

Same thing happened to me in Montana. Wired it up and drove to Columbia HD in Vancouver WA. They said the stock joints are crap and replaced it with a Heim Joint. $20 and there is no way it is coming apart.
