Im sorry, i dont have one in front of me so im at a loss as to what recess you mean. I know that on the button assy there is a plastic triangle that moves with the button, this catches somewhere on the console opening. Is this the area you ground??If i understand even a little, you relieved the tension (clearance) to ease triangle catching console???
Yes that little black triangle thing snaps into a squarish hole in the console. I enlarged the hole so it catches sooner.

Don't be grinding anything. This is a simple bolt on as I remember. I'm speaking of the 08 model as it is diffrent from the 07 model by virtue of the 08's bigger tank. If it does not simply bolt on something in your kit is missing.......................Okay I just went over to the garage and looked at my 08 SG which has the push button lid eliminating the need for a key. There is a one pice metal bar attached to the lid it's self by two screws. At each end of the metal bar there is a metal tab that acts as a spring. When you close the lid those two tabs press against the console housing putting pressure on the door. Send me a private email with an email address and I'll send you a picture if you like.

I thought that part # was for pre 08's. I was unaware of one for the new tank

Looks like you already tried this, as ive heard from others the 2 avail push buttons are intended for 07 and earlier. and not compatible with 08.

New HD catalog has several of these things listed. I ordered the wrong one and then the correct one. If anyone orders one of these out of the catalog, read carefully before ordering.

I tried the same thing and couldn't get it to work... Took it back for a refund then took a look at the new SE Ultra... and yes it has the chrome dome type "keyless" opener... and infact the fuel door "does" have a stronger hinge spring to pop the door open.... Asked the parts people to look it up on the computer... They tried and couldn't find it... Now we all suspect a version will soon be avail for the standard 08 Ultra's in the future.

With that in mind... I don't intend to engineer any mods...

If you use a dremel and elongate the area that catches the plastic snap, it will work. See how I did it in the pic

Or you can get a blank barrel key for $1 and keep it in a tool kit .
