I never looked at my mufflers on my bagger, but for my sloptial I made a drill bit for that, I took a 1 foot rod ground 6 side's on the base of it (for the chuck to hold) and welded a 1" whole saw on the other side. Worked like a charm. I drilled out 5 or 6 set's of mufflers with it. But you should buy real mufflers ASAP.

On my other bike (Triumph) I used a 1/2"X12" bit extender and a 1" step drill bit (uni-bit). It worked great -- the step drill doesn't grab like a hole saw does. It's made for thin metal hole drilling.

Here's my .02 centsIf you drill out your mufflers you will not be happy and you neighbor will not like you. Your bike will be very loud to the point people may not want to ride behind you. If money a issue go for it but if you have about 250 buck you can get some samson slip on they sound great. Good look

I've got to agree with those saying don't bother with it. I went through this exercise on a dresser I had in the 80's. First drilled a few .25 holes in the rear plug, then a couple more holes in the front plug, and then I finally took a hole saw and drilled out both plugs so I was finally just straight through. Neighbors that came by to visit that night thought I was nuts. Final result was the bike had sort of a hearty chug, chug sound to it.....maybe more like rap, rap, rap. Sounded grim. Put a pair of Cycle Shack slip-ons on and couldn't have been happier. ymmv, of course

I was going to do this too.I had 3 pairs of stock slip ons to experiment on,but just came across a V&H Propipe for 200 bucks.I'm gonna do that instead.

My advice, wait, and maybe find a used set of better exhaust.

On the 2005 touring mufflers, there is a middle plug/plate on the front and rear of the mufflers. I drilled both out, using about a 1/4 inch bit (it took several passes to get most of the plug out). The back ones were easy, but the front ones took a long bit. I forget how long, but you can measure using a wire. I did not do any other adjustments to the baffling and they sound pretty good. They are not too loud and I have very little popping. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
