Default Road Glide ignition switch removal

I recently bought an 01 Road Glide and am taking it apart for some new paint. I've hit a snag in the road with taking the ignition switch off so I can get to the screws that hold the inner support fairing in place. I'm sure there is a trick to it but I am new to the touring group family. Can someone tell me how to get just the chrome part of the ignition where the key goes in off?

Thanks in advance for the help....Glook1

Not sure if the same procedure applies to your '01, but here is how you get the switch off on my '07 according to the service manual (i'm paraphrasing below):

1) Insert key into switch and turn to the unlock position. Leave key in.
2) Turn the forks to the left fork stop and rotate the swtich to the FORK LOCK position
3) Depress the small release button at the bottom (left side) with a small screwdriver. Push key down and turn 60 degrees in a counterclockwise direction.
4) Lift straight up.

I've done it once and it's pretty simple.

Getting it back together can be a mother #$@# If it don't slide down into position use a thin screwdriver to move tumblers in a straight line . Make sure you post some pics of that new paint.
