ok.... go with the Heli Coil as it sits below the surface. Just MAKE SURE you DO NOT drill to deep. You don't want to break thru and have a leak again..... You can have it done in a few minutes...... Use something small to gauge the depth of the current depth and use a piece of tape on the drill bit so you don't go to deep. Insert the helicoil and your done....
http://www.helicoil.in/helicoil.htm#hi

Scroll up on this page and open the catalogue this will give drill depths along with size and tap..... if you need help selecting the correct one let me know and Ill help you....

Timesert will work if you can live with a raised lip. Not sure if the primary cover will fit flush.
They are installed after the appropriate machine work is done. Part of the work is counterboring to compensate for the lip which prevents them from screwing into the hole as you insert your fastener. These are a much more permanent repair than the helicoil-like inserts.

The insert looks to be counter sunk into (in this case the inner primary) the repaired hole area....there is even a bit that comes in the kit to counter sink the hole.....at least that the way it looks to me. Otherwise the Timesert is totally useless in this case.

Also the original poster said something about using (or not using enough) silicone on the primery......I am not so sure thats the way to go. It should hold just fine with a new gasket and correct torque.

Helicoils are not a temporary fix...they will last a very long time...like forever. Shovels were notorios for the single exhaust stud stripping out. Once the coilwas put in the stud was stronger than stock.

Ah yes. I remember that well now. Thanks for bringing back the memory of that sinking feeling when I realized that I had stripped the threads on that Shovel. A heli-coil will do the job.

Timesert is so much better than Heli-coil for something like this.
I agree there. Did you put the correct bolt back in the hole, some bikes have different lengths in different positions.

Just to let you know, a guy came in the dealership with a stripped out oilpan bolt. Wanted to go the heli-coil way of fixing it and because of this info here I turned him on to this product. The guy was jumping up and down with glee because of it. Big thanks for you guys input.

Uhhh.....did I really say "glee?"[sm=ummmmokay.gif]

Just to let a few you know,Helicoils are a good permanent product.I'm a machinist and also do assembly of parts for for companies that manufacture airplane components. The parts are always assembled with Helicoil or Spiralock inserts.
As far as the proper countersink to use,use a 120 deg. c'sink.
The insert should be 3/4-1 1/2 turns in from flush.
If you use a "tanged" insert,be sure to remove the tang after breaking it off.
There are also tangless inserts which reqiure a special insert tool, not cheap.

Well guys I have beenpresented with some goodoptions and yesterday I started with a new bolt and that didn't work, so today picking up a longer bolt. I placed a punch through the hole and it went through the hole entirely. It's the hole next to the drain plug on the right. So I don't know if the longer bolt will work , but for 2 bucks what the hell. Couldn't I put a nut on a longer bolt? also I got the thread saver from permatec, will try that next, then the helicoil.
Thanks for everything.
