Default 99 Road King - gas mileage, tank size, gas light

A couple questions about my 99 RKC since my service manual is on order and I can't even figure out how to lift the seat

1.) Is the gas tank 4 or 5 gallons?
2.) I'm getting 40-50mpg on the bike. Is that typical?
3.) The gas light comes on a 1/4-tank. Does that mean I have 1 gallon of gas left in there?

Totally off subject, but I keep reading about a "primary" and wondering what the heck that is. I thought these bikes have dry clutches?

What Nick 56 said for the first 3.

The "Primary" is that large chrome thing under your left leg. It houses the stator for your electrical system, a chain that turns it and the clutch which turns the tranny. It is a wet multiplate clutch, however some modified bikes run them dry.

Yes it is a 5 gallon tank. But my experience with low fuel warning light is this. EVERYONE is different. Some come on when you have a gallon or more left, and some come on with less then 1/2 gallon. My suggestion is to ride the bike, and when the light comes on fill it. Check this way a couple of times and you'll have a fairly accurate idea of how much fuel your bike takes when it hits that mark. As far as fuel mileage, I too see the mpg that your seeing depending on riding conditions. 80mph is 40, 45 to 50 mph is closer to 50.
Good luck and injoy.

The seat screws down at the back of the seat.5 gallons,I got 35-40 with mine(99 RKC),Dont trust the low fuel light.First thing I did with mine is to put a canister of extra gas in one of the saddle bags, filled up the tank, and rode it till it ran out.177 miles..now I knew the range.
Wet clutch..that way you can ride it like a motorcycle.....friction zone...

I just got back from Daytona, 191.4 miles when light came on filled it 4.36 gallons I guess I would have made it home but wont risk getting stuck.

p.s Murphyslaw1978 are you enjoying the RKC over the 911 ?

Interesting, so the primary oil system is it's own and must be drained as part of regular maintenance (oil & filter)? Does it use the same type oil as the engine or does it use the tranny gear oil?

So far, I've been filling up when the light comes on, and I've been putting in 3.5 gallons. So it looks like my bike is a little conservative.

Good idea, I think I'll try that with my bike. Where can I get a "canister?" Also, is there storage under the seat? I have heard that these bikes don't come with a toolkit?

Hey, Ernie911! Small world . Yes, I'm enjoying the RKC just as much as the 911, but they are completely different animals. One thing is common and that is the air-cooled engine, the fun factor of driving them, and performance. Some say that HDs are slow, but I've found this Road King to be much more nimble than my Honda Shadow. Additionally, the HD just loves it when you get on the gas and start taking corners more spiritedly. Whatever the image of what the bike looks like, it really likes to run (same with the Porsches).
