PLANNING A LONG TRIP IN JUNE 08 ( HELP )

RE: PLANNING A LONG TRIP IN JUNE 08 ( HELP )
Some more advise to add to the confusion. I've done long trips, 1,000 plus miles a day to shorter 250 to 500. Check out Iron Butt web site, they have a ton of useful info on distance riding if your so incline. We ran the old route 66 to the Grand Canyon 3 years ago, gotta tell you that was a blast, went from90 degree weather to 35 degrees in one day. T shirt and jeans to full leather. Really depends on where you want to go. I'd suggest Googling the area for weather, that will give you some idea on what to bring as far as clothing. My wife and I prefer Bed & Breakfasts. We've stayed at litterally 20 or more and Have Never Been Disappointed. The one think that we always do is tell them that we are arriving by motorcycles so that we aren't alarmed. The funniest thing to us in a small town in Northern Pa at a bed and breakfast, one of the other couples that was staying at the same time shared with us later in the weekend that they were Scared of us bikers, and didn't want to get tooooo close. What a hoot.... Enjoy your trip, hopefully you've got enough info to make it enjoyable.

RE: PLANNING A LONG TRIP IN JUNE 08 ( HELP )
First of all plan on having the time of your life, Last June I went on a 3K ride with just the guys and I can't wait for out next one.
I would recomend that you have all the basic tools, a few spare bulbs 1156/1157, and most importantly a good tire gauge and use it every morning before you start your bike. I dedicated one saddle bag for bike stuff which never leaves the bike even when I am running around town..I have the following goodies in it : raingear, spare sunglasses with clear and tinted lenses, extra bungee cords, zip ties, 1 quart of oil, tool roll, soft terry towel, rubber kitchen gloves ( for rain), sun block, and a spare bottle of water.
I would suggest having several layers of clothing readily available, last year it was 114 degrees at the Hoover Damn and snowed the the next day as we pulled in to Lake Tahoe. I also suggest taking old socks and underwear like a previous poster mentioned, then throwing them away as you go, you end up gaining space as you go. I also suggest several pairs of gloves depending on the weather you may want your winter gloves to start then fingerless later in the same day. A good pair of shoes for walking different from your riding boots will be godsend after along day of riding, I throw in a pair of Crocs to relax in.
When you are looking at a T-Bag or similar type of luggage pay attention to how tall they are. I have one by Saddleman ( sorry I don't know the model) it is a great bag but with the roll bag attached to the top it can be a little unruly in the crosswinds, remember your luggage does not lean with you like a passenger but often occupies the same space minus the legs. Pack to keep the weight close to the seat.
If you happen to cruise HWY 50 through Nevada, get gas at every town, in some places it is 100 miles between towns, literally. I hope this helps along with all the other posts. Don't forget your camera ( I have a digital and at the end of ride party we swapped picture cd's) and most of all HAVE A GREAT RIDE!!!
