I have an 07 HD Street Glide with 5K miles on it. Everything is stock as of right now. I have been told that a white puff of smoke comes out of the left exhaust pipe when I let off of the throttle.

I mentioned it to the service guy at my dealer, and I suggested a couple of things it might be, he just looked blanked faced back at me.

This happened before the 5K service and after the service. The bike is only 2 months old. I use syn 3 in it.

Any ideas out there on what it might be causing this?

Now let's be serious, could be a leaking manifold or too much oil
in the engine. (check the level)
Start the engine and spray WD40 onto the manifold, when RPM changes
the manifold is leaking (sucking false air)
Let me know your findings.

I would think that when you let up off the throtle the butterfly on the intake closes off* and then the pistons with the rpms decellerating (flywheel weight, down shifting what ever) is still sucking when the intake valve opens up every intake cycle.

The absense of fuel air mixture *and continued spark, its sucking something someplace and very well could be oil from one of two places! So its obvious that it has to burn! That generally is what causes a white puff of smoke..(a water cooled engine it could also be antifreeze coolant, but thats not the case here! Unless its a V-Rod)

Either valve guides, leaking past the seals in the head sucking down the oil to burn. Or the piston, oil scraper ring never seated properly and oil is getting sucked upward into the combustion chamber to burn!

If you do a compression test and then a leak down compression test that will tell you volumes about the engine health.

An air leak into the intake would only cause white smoke if the leak was around some exterior oil leak and that oil was getting sucked into the air leak. Other then that it would be a lean condition (extra air in the combustion chamber).

The dealer should be able to sort things out well enough if you don't have the tools to do so.

Are you sure the color is white and not blue? If engine oil was entering the combustion chamber the color of smoke would be blue not white I thought.

True, more oil would be more blue in color!

I've seen carbed engines blowing out a puff of white smoke looking stuff that was actually fuel air mixture, too.

I'd think that if it was a fuel rich mixture in a fuel injected bike that something is not real right! EPA would be going bonkers over that one!

 

If it was running rich, it would be more of a sooty black smoke. I go with the above poster on some kind of intake leak.
