RE: 9 spoke wheel
The bearings, spacers, inner sleeve and the wheel all have different part numbers. If it were only the bearings, the need for a new wheel part number would not be needed.
I would suggest that the bearing bores in the wheels are different to meet the differences in possible bearing thicknesses.
For whatever reason...........I would not just "Change the Bearings".

RE: 9 spoke wheel
I just did it today. You are correct, spacers & 3/4" bearrings.
[ul][*]The 02 thru 07 wheels have a larger clearance hole for the axle sleve spacer, A 2000 thry 2001 have a smaller one. You can put a late model wheel on an earley model (2000 to 2001) but not a earley model onto a late model as the 1/8" wall spacer will not fit through the hole.[/ul][ul][*]On the new 08 bearings, they are 25mm and thinner in width. The outer spacers would have to be made longer just for your reference only. [/ul]
As far as this thread goes,
(inner) axle sleave spacers (what HD calls them). & 3/4" bearings.
