Best Battery For Cranking Modified Engine
I replaced the OE battery in my 01 RK in March 2006 because it died over the winter(not on a tender). Later that year I did some engine work.I am running 95 cu.in. 10.25:1 with S&S heads, 570G cams and a Mikuni carb. Ever since, I have trouble starting it when the ambient temp reaches about 50 degrees or less. If I give it a jump, it fires instantly. The current battery is from Batteries Plus. I figure it does not have sufficient CCA to crank the high compression engine. Should I go back to the OE battery ormaybe anOdyssey?

I would recommend the Odyssey...........over 900 cca for 5 seconds.

That will be my next battery when I have to replace my stocker.

I do have compression releases installed. I am jumping at the starter and clean bolt on engine due to easy access. I pulled the seat tonight when I got home and found both terminals of the battery clean. More CCA's are what I believe I'm after. Too bad Harley doesn't say how many CCA's their battery has.

If you have compression releases installed on a 95" motor and have trouble starting then you may want to check your battery cables. I ran your setup for 3 years with the same stock battery and no compression releases. When I did change batteries I went with the (I think model is 925) Odyessey. I got four years out of that battery and half of that was with motor being stroked to 116" (compression releases installed). By the way, the Big Boar battery IS the Odyessey batttery.

I went with the Odyssey 925. Installed it, hit the start button and she was running instantly. That was yesterday when it was 75 degrees. Today it cooled down to around 50. Again, hit the button, she cranked maybe two or three revolutions and was running. That is one hell of a battery!!
