I'm going to fix the oil leak I have on my '03 Ultra this winter, not sure exactly where it's leaking but it's either the shift shaft or backside of the inner primary. What I'd like to know is if anyone has experience with this and has any advice as to what else to replace while doing this? I figure while I have everything apart, I may as well put back new what normally may wear out. The bike has about 55,000 mile on it with no other issues other than the slight oil leak.
I appreciate any advice or opinions on what to look for that may be worn and/or should be replaced. Thanks!
The shaft seal repair is a major undertaking, have to remove an awful lot of stuff to get at a $2 seal, had HD do mine, it's a 3-4 hour job. Need several special HD tools to get things apart and back together.
I had the same leak. Before I ripped it apart I changed the tranny oil from H.D. oil to Mobil 1,and then drained about 2 ounces of oil out of the primary. The leak stopped(knock on wood).I'm not sure which one did it,I did both thing's before riding it again.
My 02 had the same leak. The tech did all the seals around that area and the transmission. The leak was actually between the inner primary case and the transmission as I recall. It did take an experienced wrench about 3 hours to do.
If its the shift shaft seal, wrap tape around the shaft splines before sliding new seal on.There is a post here regarding this and the use of a better aftermarket seal(James?).
