s&s cams?

RE: s&s cams?
Hey Glenn,
You do realize that wind resistence becomes a much greater factor when you get over about 75mph ~ right? That is why fuel milage goes to hell.
A bigbore (95"), a set of HQ0034's, and a GOOD tune on that Tmax will go a long way towards making you scoot run "more like" you want it.
If you are really looking to make a BIG difference, the you may need to conside a complete package that includes heads and increased compression.
For grins, go to this site (http://www.head-quarters-usa.com/customtwin.html )and click "Start your Build". Walk your way through the build and it will help you better understand what it takes to get various results, under various sets of criteria.
Any build requires a GOOD tune for best results (right Karl / Jason?). I am not just talking about letting the TMax set your AFR. You HAVE TO get the timing set right to or your results will be a fraction of what they could be. With regard to timing on performancce builds.... "less is more" in many cases.

RE: s&s cams?
The 585 is too much cam for a bagger. You may get by with it if you switch to 3.37:1 gear ratio. With the 96 in motor the S&S 570 cam will make 100/100. I ran the 570 in a 99 Roadking for about 4 years and almost 80k miles and that was with 3.37:1 ration AND 31 tooth transmission pulley (Jim's .86 od transmission). This bike would SCREAM with that setup.

RE: s&s cams?
I just got back with my bike from the shop that installed the 510G cams. It runs really nice. Good power all the way around. It is definately louder and has a nice chop to it at idle. The engine feels really tight, blip the throttle and the bike lurches forward. Its very crisp on the road, 60-80 on the highway is a blast.
The gear drive makes a different noise...gear noise than the stock chain but its not a whine, more like a whrrrrr sound. It's noticable but not objectionable.
Its a good mod, I'm glad I did it. Seat of the pants says...two thumbs up. Sorry no dyno numbers.
