I plan on about 500 miles a day and by the time I'm in to the last 100 miles I'll find a motel6 or something and book a room down the road. That way I know I have a bed to sleep in thats not too far away. I use to book a room in the morning before I hit the road but found that gave a limit to the days rideing or someplace i had to be if I was really taking my time.

I couldn't see breaking a 500 mile trip up into two days, unless there was a specific purpose for stopping for a while other than being tired of riding.

 

I agree with the many poster's pointshere on this subject.

However, for me, the miles ridden are not the issue, its the saddle time.

I'm good for about8 hours saddle timeper day comfortably on my RK regardless of the miles ridden.

 

Its not the miles as much as the hours. Plan on averaging about 50 MPH for the trip for a realistic idea of how long it will take then decide if its longer than you want to ride or adjust the starting time accordingly. We made our first 400 mile trip this summer and like Dalton said about every 100 to 120 miles between breaks is a good run.

This has tips and a site for planning your trip. This will make the 500-600 miles a piece of cake.
Since you will be riding solo and the wife in a cage you will be able to stretch the miles out before stopping.
Main thing is be mentaly prepared and relax. Aftert you get there you will see how easy this short ride really is. I am jealous though, I don't get to ride to.

I've done several 700+ days on the King. Personal best was 798 (Denver to Vegas) on my Heritage Springer though. As long as it's me, my bike and the road, I really don't care!!!

 

Very doable, but if it is her first ride, take a couple days to see all the sites and show her it is about the Ride and not just the Destination.

 

500 a day should be no problem.Came back from the Smokys to Detroit straight through once, 2 up on a loaded sportster. Another time we only made 25 miles in a day because we found a great campsite. It's all about the journey. I have to agree with some of the other posts though why not leave the cage at home. If you make 500 the first day great if not there is always tomorrow.

 

when I was 18 I would do 800 on a sporster[sm=headbang.gif]. Age,health and bike..ect can have a lot to do with it.
As long as you can stay alert then go for it.
