Loud clank while shifting into 1st

click click click .... clunk
I have the same issue. From the threds above I am getting the feeling that "its a Harley"... I can deal with that. One friend said try shifting smoother and with a softer touch... and I get an even worse sound..."click click click, Clunk". Trying to find a happy medium.

my 08 sg must be different then. it will clunk into first when the clutch and primary aren't warmed up, but after that, it goes into gear just as quiet as a jap bike. and that's saying a lot. try pulling in the clutch lever a few times before you start it. it helps. when the oil in the primary and clutch packs is cold, there is quite a bit of friction because the oil isn't warmed up yet. and there is a film that stays on the plates and steels in your clutch. i use 20-50 royal purple in the engine and primary, and the 85-140 in the trans. it snicks into gear. don't just expect it to not clunk if you immediately stab the shift lever when pulling in the clutch. study how the clutch works, and you'll understand what i mean with allowing the clutch to release its fluid coupling before jamin it into gear.
