I have had my thunderheaders on for about 6000 miles with no discoloring. My bike is carbed and has some work done to the carb plus I have duals, I would say that has to help. They do get a little soot but the sound they make out ways any of the negatives.

I'm pretty good about keeping my bike clean most of the time, so I guess the soot won't bug me. They do sound sick...what really got wanting to switch was going on an overnight ride with 10 otherguys. Theyare used to riding together andthey ride in a tight pack, tighter than I was comfortable with, so I hung out in back on the trip. After 600 miles of following 4 dressers with THs', I found myself saying, "I need some Thunderheaders!" Kinda sucks cause I've already put $500Ovals on her...A guy I work with has a new Ultra that's all stock, maybe he'll take them off my hands for a few bucks.

i dont know about heat shield, but my TH getting gold in the body of the slip on to the back...so we can clearly see that gold colour....
but my TH getting goldish when my carb is stock with stock jet...maybe too lean...??? now i put my gold TH to the left side and put the left (still no gold)to the right side, and change to mikuni, and ride for 2000 miles ...no colour change....

My Dad has 02 Road King with V&H true Duals andthe Thunderheader slip-ons. I had 04 Road King with True Dual Rineharts. At that time we both had the same build. 88" with S&S 510G Cams, S&S super E Carb. They both were dyno'd the same day on the same dyno by the same tunner, my dad's had more TQ & HP not much just a few more of each. If I remember right mine had 74HP & 84TQ and my Dad's had 76HP and 88TQ. Like I said it was not much but it was enough that you could feel it by the seat of the pants and everytime we would race and do roll on's he would walk away from me. So not only did his bike walk all over mine it sounded louder and better doing it. I couldn't have it no longer that next winter I did the BB with 10.5:1 compression with Baseily Heads. I loved the sound of the Dad's Bike so much I bought a 2-1 Thunderheader and now I'm walking away from Him big time. But his slip-ons are louder then my 2-1,it has the same patato sound as the slip-ons but just not as loud.
