Default cam bearings

hi, i have a 2000 road king classic with 24,000 miles on it. in the past couple of weeks i hear noise coming from the bottom of the motor.i asked some other riders and almost everyone is telling me that the cam bearings are on the way out. has anyone replaced the bearings and did you do it yourself or had the dealer do it. also do you know how much does the dealer charge for the job?
thanks

Could be the cam bearings. They had issues with the first couple of years in the TC. Also could be your cam chain tensioners. I would be looking to replace the entire assembly with a gear drive set-up. I did it on my 1999 RKC. It's a little spendy, but it was worth it just for the peace of mind that there were no tensioners grinding on chains in there. I did the work myself. Straight forward job IMO. You'll need a couple of specialty tools.

Early production 2000 and all 1999 TC's had both cam bearings the same. Late 2000 and later had a roller bearing for the rear cam and a ball bearing for the front. There was an extended warranty for these that covered cam bearing failures for 5 years and 50,000 miles. I have an early production 2000 EG and had this covered back in 2001 at 9000 miles. I don't know if any dealers will make any allowances on warranty this late or not. Just have to ask.

The berrings are fairly easy to replace if you have tools and know how to use them, you will need to either press them in or throw them in the freezer to get them in the cam support plate as well as buy the adjustable push rods unless you want to pull the rockers to get the ones you have from the factory, easy to get out if you go back with the adjustable rods just cut them with a bolt cutter. Buy a shop manual it will help alot and becarefull with the oil pump when removing the cam plate, realy pretty easy job with the right tools. Good luck.
