Get my new bike tomorrow. Got it..Pic links!
Picking up my first Harley ('06 Road King) on Saturday morning. What should I look out for on the first ride?
Besides frostbite! I'm only going about 10 miles or so seeing as we are expecting snow this weekend.
Just wondered if anything radical might normally appear during a maiden voyage that I should watch for on a Harley.
Does it take time to bed in the brakes, or are are they pretty good right out of the hole.
Just psyching myself up.....
Thanks!

Rode home in a light rain on my first ride on my new '05 RK Classic last Feb. Actually pretty stable ride. Brakes worked great. Just watch out for bugs in your teeth from all of the smiling you will be doing. Enjoy and worry not.

Good for you! Congrats on your new ride!
Theres not a whole lot you can do to screw anything up in 10 miles. I think the book recommends no hard stops, Dont go over 50 miles per hour for the first 50 or something like that, dont wind the gears out too tight before you shift.
I say just use common sense, and enjoy your new ride.

dont lug the engine. if it is real cold, i would take the long way home so the bike gets good and hot. with possible bad weather coming you dont want to "put it away semi warmed up". brakes will need to bed in, so dont tailgate. hope for all in cold climates, we get a few decent days riding days before january.

Take it easy on the brakes. warm it up good. Run it a few extra times around the block to get as many miles on it as you can. Dont let it lug below 2000 rpm. Dont smoke while youre gassing it up. Dont pick up ugly women, there are plenty of pretty ones. Dont pick up ANY women if youre married and want to stay that way.
Some may disagree with me, but the only thing I"m worried about breaking in is the brakes. I run em like I'm going to ride em, from the GitGo.. They run it up really hard at the factory when they are building it. With the newer methods of machining and smoother bores, the main thing is to seat the rings and you are done. The way that rings seat themselves is with internal pressure in the combustion chamber. Just dont tell the wrenches that you ran it like a banshee while breaking it in.

Thanks!
My only real worry is the road I have to drive on. Major number of strip malls. Everyone is already in a frenzy about shopping.
No one looks as it is. Throw holiday traffic and the fact that all the SUV-driving-stressed-out-cell-phone-yapping, women are out driving.....
Sorry if I offended any of the ladies on the forum. But let's be real and face it.....
