I had my shifter shaft seal replaced at 32,000 miles. Now I'm having it replaced again at 40,000 miles. Covered by my 7 year extended service contract but I'm wondering why the first replacement didn't last longer than 8,000 miles. I do a lot of riding at 85 to 90 mph but they always say to ride them hard. Also had new cams, cam chain, tensioner and oil pump replaced at 35,000 miles. (Also covered under warranty) 2005 Road King Classic. Who knows!

Leaking....
Hey guys, what an old thread! I guess thats a sign of a good thread though! LOL! I ride an '03 Road King and love it. I've got 30k on it and just got home from a 600 mile ride today. A few hours later I went to the Garage and there was a leak! It looks like it may be the shifter seal, just not sure. If it was the shifter seal, wouldn't the oil get on the belt? Mine isn't leaking down to the drain plug and it's not on the belt at all. A little got back to my pipe on the left side. I use OEM tranny fluid in the tranny and the primary, so no way to tell the difference by color. I saw some wet oil between the tranny and the primary. It really looked to be just froward of the shifter seal. I wiped everything down, sprayed it with a good engine degreaser, and washed it off. I'll see if I can track it down tomorrow.
So, has anyone got the part number of the comotic seal?

My last bike was an 01 Eletra Glide. When I sold it, it was on its third shift shaft seal, and that seal was leaking. It had 40K miles and the last 5K were with a leaking seal. I never thought that it could have been over filled to the full mark. I will be very carfefull on my new bike not to over fill the transmission.

I used the SKF 4260 seal. It's MUUUUUCH better than the POS seal from Moco! I put one in a few months ago and NO leaks, no issues at all. It's a far superior seal. After you pull primary (not hard, just tedious), the old seal comes out by drilling a couple little holes and threading in a screw to pop it out. Put electrical tape over the shifter shaft splines and a little grease to protect the new seal, and it slides on and pops right in. Good to go.
