Default Volume/Grounding Problem on a FLHT Radio

I just added a factory radio/cd player to my 2003 FLHT. I plugged in the power cord before I installed the radio to make sure it worked. It wouldn't come on until I accidentally touched the outer-housing of the passing lamp with the radio bodywhile Iwas pressing the on button of the radio. I installed the radio in the fairing and ran a ground wire from inside the fairing to the back of the radio. Is this normal, and will this set-up hurt the radio? The only problem I have is the radio has no volume from 0 to mid-volume. From mid-volume on, the radio volumeworks fine. Any ideas or tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, B.J.
