drive belt

RE: drive belt
One other thing, you absolutely MUST adjust at the tightest spot or all the measuring in the world won't get a good adjustment. That is why it seems to change to the tighter side when you check sometimes. You are checking in a different spot on the belt. With the bike up in the air on the rear, feel the lower strand with a bit of upward pressure while turning the rear wheel. You will feel the belt push back on your hand at the tight spots. Mark the belt and go through one revolution. Go BACKWARDS to return to the tightest spot and adjust it there. Makes a big difference.

RE: drive belt
An HD tech at Daytona bike week once told methat the belt will loosen when there is weight on the bike. He said tighter is better than looser. A buddy of mine snapped his at 30,000 miles ..Thats why I was asking. I keep mine in the middle..not real tight not loose. never any problem. 50,000 on my 03 Ultra and many prior touring Hogs.. since 1987.. No issues. PS He also said change the belt at 100,000 miles

Nick, they call for a tighter adjustment in the SM for 06 Touring bikes with the bike in the air (on a jack). That would imply that your tech was right about it getting looser with weight on it. Also just noticed the book says check the tension at the LOOSEST spot, not the tightest! Is that right?
I am now totally confused since, at least to me, this would seem to indicate an even tighter adjustment is called for.
Anybody have real experience like doing this hundreds of times at a shop?

RE: drive belt
i am getting a lot of feedback. I can see how loose will wear, but just a tad on the loose would be better than too tight. I look at a bearing adn see all the force on it would push any lube out between the roller and race. I want it tight,, but not too tight....I feel that what i had was too tight , even if it was factor.
I am checking tonight , cold on the jack, loosest spot will be 5/16/3/8 ,, I wont get it tighter that 1/4 with the moco guage

RE: drive belt
Got to admit haven't read the book on my 06 EGC on belt adjustment.
But on the 98 RG book states for riders weight to be in the saddle and bike straight up before adjusting.
This brings the belt into a more straight line position and the front and rear pulleys at their furthest extension.
Then tighen accordingly.
UsuallyI wait until cold weather comes in and listen for a little chirp sound when taking off.
Then adjust belt until the chirp just goes away.

Well, a Harley Mechanic on another site says he does the 06s at 1/2 inch and anything tighter seems to cause noise. The 06 service manual calls for the bike on sidestand, no luggage or anyone in the saddle, from 1/4-3/8" at room temp.
This seems to result in a tension too tight when warmed up and I did it at the TIGHTEST spot. The 06 owner's manual and Shop manual BOTH SAY ADJUST AT THE LOOSEST SPOT! That would make it even tighter.
Is that a misprint or am I just going nuts?
