Default Shift Speeds

Still waiting for the Owners Manual to come from the dealer who had to orderit formy 2002 FLHRI I bought there about a month back. In the meantime I have a couple of questions perhaps someone would answer: (1) What is the spark plug part# and (2) I don't want to overrev the engine so what are the upshift speeds? Tks.

1. Don't know.

2. Don't worry about over revving your engine, it has a rev limiter. You need to worry about the opposite....lugging the engine. This is when I shift....

Into 2nd: 20-25 mph
Into 3rd: 35 - 40 mph
Into 4th: 45 - 50mph
Into 5th: 60 mph

Of course these are ballpark numbers.

Thanks for the upshift speeds. I thought they would have been a bit lower thanthat but Idon't want to lug the engine either. Good info.

Be careful. The owners maual has the speeds about 10 mph less for all these gears. Way to low IMO.

Harley's don't have tachometers, so shift speeds are learned. There is a flattening out of the power band as a shift is coming up. Also you will learn the sound of the proper shift speed. Unless you are not paying attention (heaven forbid) you will rarely if ever damage a Harley engine from overreving. Don't worry ,it will come to you as it did for all of us oldsters.

I agree with Petemac'sshift speeds. I like tach's, but not the "hang on" variety. First thing I did to my `02 Wide Glide was put a combination tach and speedometer on it. I watch the tach more than the speedo.

I use Autolite4164 plugs. I believe the actualH-D to Autolite crossover chart shows AutoliteMP4164's, but IMHO, I don't think platinum plugs are worth the extra money.

My shift speeds are about 5 mph shy of what petemac posted. Now if I'm really wanting to get on it and cause some noise, I will shift about where he lists.
