I own an 08 Ultra, and love it. YES, it's 10% bigger. Yes, it's 96 CI..... so what?? that makes it f*cking tiny compared to the OTHER bikes in the Harley class right? 102 for the warrior - AIR COOLED, Roadliner is 113 - AIR COOLED, The Hammer/Vegas/Kingpin - 100 CI - Air cooled as well (with an oil cooler).

I LOVE my Ultra. I will NEVER trade it for a victory or a yamaha..........but comeon guys, HD isn't the ONLY company making air cooled bikes, and ALL of them have to meet EPA emmissions.....
What is yourpoint? When I stated that the 96 is bigger than the 88, I was referingto a larger engine will prolly run a tad hotter. Hell...Briggs and Stratton makes air cooled twins! [sm=icon_cheers.gif] Good luck with your 08!

BTW...Decided to wait the rain out and leave for the mountains in the am so the Harley heat don't bother me!![sm=escape.gif]

Have a safe weekend everyone!

Not trying to start a war, just saying that HD's excuse for these things running THIS hot as an EPA problem is BS. Like I said, mine isn't that bad, it's tolerable, but hot, but I saw another thread where it's having paint effects. There are LOTS of air cooled bikes that have bigger than 96 inch engines. And they don't blister paint, and burn your thigh to extra crispy.... all I am saying

Just want to put my 2 cents in on this subject. I will start off by saying that I have been riding for over 30 years. I have owned 5 motorcycles, the last two have been Road Kings, a 2001 FLHRP and a 2007 FLHR. Here are my thoughts: My 2001 FLHRP ran hot in traffic, my 2007 FLHR runs hot in traffic.IfI wanted a bike that ran cool in traffic I would have bought amotorcycle with a water-cooled engine, like a Wing. The motor in my 07 has some very light ticking sounds,my 01 had the same sounds. When an engine sits entirely exposed you will here certain sounds, most of which are supposed to be there. You would hear these same sounds in your car engine if you sat directly above it with no firewall, floorboards or insulation between it an you.My07had the dreaded transmission chatter in fifth (not talking about the straight cut gear in fifth) and sixth. I put Mobil 1 75W90 in the transmission and guess what, no more chatter. With just a fluid change, the bikepulls hard from 50 mph (1800 rpm's) in sixth. An IDSis also supposedcure transmission chatter. So far no weeping between the transmission and crankcase, however, the bike did have the high speed wobble so often discussed,my 01had thesame wobble.I put on a True Track and thewobble 90% cured, Metzeler's to come

I thinkHD is guilty of is not admitting to the chatter in the transmission and the high speed wobble. Theywon't admit to the transmission chatter because (in my opinion)theyare not going toadmit that theirFormula + is tolight for the transmission andthey get a bunch of youto spendmore moneyfor anIDS.I also don't expect Harleyto own up to the high speed wobble/rear steer ontheir touring modelsbecause they are litigating quite a few law suits on this issue.

Final thoughts: I saw severalposts where people were complaining that for what we pay for a new Harley, itshould be perfect. Well, when I purchase a motorcycle or a car, there are generally things I plan on doing,i.e. tune and mufflers for starters. When I purchased my07 Mustang GT, I purchased itknowing that I was going to dosignificant engine and suspension modifications. When I purchased my 07 FLHR I knew the drawbacks ofthe current V-twin and touring frame technology. I bought my FLHR fully knowing that I was going to make certain modifications. In my mind, nothing is ever perfect from the factory. Cars and Motorcyclesare engineered to make compromises between performance, comfort, durability and cost. At this point I have modified my Road King to my specifications (with more to come) and I really am enjoying my new ride.

One more point, the day will come when Harley has not choice but to update their engine and frame technology andI guarantee you the complaints will be flying. Everyone will be sitting around these forumswriting abouthow much better it was in the old days.

Just my 2 cents.

Not sure if the line about "ALL have to meet EPA" is accurate. I believe, although I'm not 100 % certain, that if a bike builder makes less than a certain number...they are exempt from the currentEPA standards. I thought I read that on the EPAs motorcycle emission standards somewhere in the section that talks about the "tier" system...with the final year being 2010.

Got mine back the other day. Turned out not to be an oil leak. Instead, they said it was stearing fork greese that splattered down. They replaced the factory greese, which they said is really thin, to something thicker. I actually may believe that since I saw a big gobb of it drip on the front fender when I washed it about two weeks ago. Anyway, I feel better now and will have another chance to see if it reoccurs on the upcoming Thunder Beach trip. No other problems with my '07.
